Trump’s AI plan could help find disease cures faster

President Trump signed an executive order on Monday to speed scientific discovery using artificial intelligence. The order directs the Energy Department and its national labs to build an integrated AI platform using existing and future supercomputers. According to CBS News, the White House calls this effort the Genesis Mission.

Goal and Scope of Genesis Mission

The mission aims to analyze massive data sets from federal government, university, and private sector sources. These data sets cover science, engineering, energy, and health care. The White House hopes the effort will lead to faster breakthroughs in areas like disease therapies.

Michael Krastios, science adviser to the president, told reporters the Genesis mission is the largest marshaling of federal scientific resources since the Apollo program. He said the mission will use AI to automate experiment design and accelerate simulation. This will shorten discovery timelines from years to days or even hours.

Private Sector Interest and Participation

White House officials said they want to bring in AI supercomputing capacity from the private sector. The White House reported significant interest from companies including Nvidia and Dell. The effort will start with existing supercomputers at the Department of Energy’s 17 national labs. The administration also plans to build more supercomputers.

Funding Questions Remain

Officials did not explain how the mission will be funded. They suggested more help from Congress could be needed later. One official said the Energy Department already operates some of the best supercomputing facilities in the world. The administration will use all available resources and work with Congress to invest more.

An official on the call predicted major advances in health sciences. The official said many diseases that are currently death sentences will be better understood. Scientists will learn the exact chemistry and biology behind these diseases and how to fight them. The official said progress in the next five years will surpass what has happened in the last five years.
