Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 9 and announced the company’s largest investment in Asia. The software giant plans to spend over $17.5 billion in India over four years. According to NDTV, this amounts to Rs 1.5 lakh crore. The funds will support AI infrastructure, skills development, and sovereign capabilities.

Investment Details and Scope

Microsoft said the new investment follows an earlier $3 billion commitment. That earlier sum targets cloud and AI infrastructure in Bengaluru over two years. It includes upskilling programs and new data centers. The combined spending will give Microsoft the largest hyperscale presence in India.

Nadella thanked the Prime Minister for the conversation. He posted on X that the investment will help build what India needs for an AI-first future. PM Modi responded that the world is optimistic about India when it comes to AI. He said India’s youth will use this opportunity to innovate and leverage AI power.

Microsoft’s Asia Strategy

The company statement said India stands at a pivotal moment in its AI journey. The country is emerging as a frontier AI nation. Technology is becoming a catalyst for inclusive growth and economic transformation. The nearly $20 billion investment across four years shows India’s value as a market for global software companies racing to build digital infrastructure.

Competition Among Tech Giants

Other major tech firms are also investing heavily in India. Google boss Sundar Pichai spoke to PM Modi in October about an AI hub in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam. Google partnered with the Adani Group for a data center and AI base there. The company plans to invest $15 billion over five years.

Amazon has also put billions into building data centers in India. Qualcomm’s CEO met the Prime Minister in October to discuss India’s advancements in AI and innovation. Last month, PM Modi highlighted India’s role in shaping a global AI framework. He spoke about ethical and human-centric AI and said his government is working on a policy for this topic.
