Google will invest $15 billion to build a data center and artificial intelligence base in India. The tech giant announced the plan on Tuesday. The project will take place over five years, from 2026 to 2030. It marks Google’s largest investment in India to date.

Largest AI Hub Outside the United States

The facility will be built in Vishakhapatnam, a port city in the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said at a ceremony in New Delhi that this will be the largest AI hub Google is investing in anywhere outside of the US. He added that it is part of a global network of AI centers in 12 different countries.

According to DW, the data center campus will have a capacity of 1 gigawatt initially. Kurian said the project will be scaled to multiple gigawatts. The term refers to the electricity demand required by data centers powering AI. Kurian compared the project to a digital backbone connecting different parts of India together.

Growing Demand for AI in India

Google Chief Sundar Pichai said he had spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the development. Pichai wrote on X that the hub combines gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure. He said Google will bring its technology to enterprises and users in India. The goal is to accelerate AI innovation and drive growth across the country.

India’s Internet User Base

The demand for AI tools and solutions is growing among businesses and individuals in India. The country is projected to have more than 900 million internet users by the end of this year. The new data center aims to support this expanding digital population. Google plans to deliver industry-leading technology through the facility. The investment will help India build capacity for AI-driven services and applications.
