Google pays Apple $1 billion to put Gemini in Siri

Google has positioned itself as a leader in the AI industry by combining advanced technology with strategic partnerships. According to The Verge, the company now has the resources, model quality, and user access needed to compete at the highest level. This shift comes three years after ChatGPT caught the tech giant off guard.

Apple Partnership Expands Reach

Google and Apple announced that Gemini will power the next generation of Siri. Apple is paying $1 billion per year for this technology. The deal gives Google access to a massive user base. Craig Federighi said in 2024 that Siri processes about 1.5 billion requests daily. A large portion of those requests will soon run through Gemini.

ChatGPT currently handles 2.5 billion prompts per day. The Siri partnership will help Google close that gap quickly. More users mean more data, and more data helps improve AI models and products. This creates a self-reinforcing cycle that benefits the entire platform.

Gemini 3 Sets New Standards

Google released Gemini 3 in November. The model ranks at or near the top in most benchmark tests. Experts agree it performs well across a wide range of tasks. Google trained Gemini 3 using its own TPU chips, which the company has developed over several years. This gives Google an advantage. Unlike competitors, it does not depend on Nvidia’s supply chain.

Personal Intelligence Connects User Data

Google introduced Personal Intelligence, a feature that links Gemini to user information across Google services. The system can access recent searches, YouTube videos, emails, photos, and files. This removes the need for detailed prompts every time. Google already collects extensive data about users, and now Gemini can use that information to deliver better responses.

The feature is currently in beta for paying customers. Google plans to roll it out to everyone and integrate it into its search engine. AI Mode in Search is now a tab alongside general results. Google sees this as the future of search and wants Gemini to become a central portal for all its data.

Google has the models, resources, distribution, and data access needed to win in AI. While ChatGPT still has brand recognition and daily active users, Google has built a complete ecosystem. The company has moved from being caught off guard to leading the race.
