Google makes first ad using only AI video tools

Google has released its first ad made entirely with artificial intelligence. The company used its Veo 3 video generation tool to create the full commercial. The ad started showing on TV and in movie theaters yesterday. It will appear on social and digital platforms starting today.

Thanksgiving Ad Features Cartoon Turkey

The ad is called „Planning a Quick Getaway? Just Ask Google.“ It stars Tom, a plush toy turkey who wants to leave his farm before Thanksgiving. The turkey opens the Google app on a Pixel phone and turns on AI Mode to plan his escape.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Google picked a non-human character to avoid making viewers uncomfortable. The company has not confirmed if the voice in the ad was also made by AI. A Christmas version of the ad will come out soon.

Creative Team Explains the Process

Robert Wong is VP and co-founder of Google Creative Lab. He told WSJ the team wanted to create a nostalgic feeling. They then used Veo 3 to bring the idea to life.

Wong said he understands concerns about AI-generated content. „I have the same concerns about the race to the bottom, the AI slop stuff,“ Wong told WSJ. He added that bad ads existed before AI and will continue after. Only the people making ads can stop poor quality work.

YouTube Labels Content as AI-Generated

The ad does not show an AI disclaimer in the video itself. But the YouTube page includes an „Altered or synthetic content“ label. This label appears under the „How this content was made“ section. Google’s support page says this label can refer to AI-generated videos.

Wong said most users do not care how an ad was made. Marketing teams sometimes overuse AI to impress their bosses. But regular viewers focus on the content itself.

The ad shows how far AI video tools have come. It also raises questions about AI replacing human artists in creative work. For now, the technology is being used alongside human creativity rather than instead of it.
