Apple may hike iPhone 17 prices, push storage upsell at September 9 event

Apple’s marquee event on September 9 is poised to spotlight an all-new slimmer iPhone, potentially called the “iPhone Air,” alongside the iPhone 17 and new Apple Watch models, with pricing and the role of AI under close scrutiny. According to CNN, this could mark Apple’s first dramatic iPhone redesign since 2017’s iPhone X, but analysts suggest the thin “Air” model may serve to diversify the lineup rather than redefine it.

Hardware emphasis as AI takes a back seat

Rivals have centered launches on AI assistants and features: Google put Gemini at the heart of its Pixel 10 reveal, including Magic Cue to suggest next actions, while Samsung highlighted multi-step, voice-driven tasks on the Galaxy S25. Analysts cited by CNN say Apple is expected to lean more on hardware advances than AI at this event, with its Apple Intelligence push not yet ready to lead.

Apple previously delayed a Siri update designed to work across apps and interpret on-screen content, saying it needed more time to meet its “high quality bar.” CEO Tim Cook has said the company is embedding AI across devices and increasing investments, yet IDC’s Nabila Popal told CNN that AI alone is not “compelling users to walk into stores to upgrade.” CNN also notes a broader sentiment of AI overhype amid an MIT study on ROI and muted results from Nvidia.

What upgrades may matter now

With iPhone holding 15.7% global share, CNN reports Apple will likely emphasize core functions such as battery life, camera quality, and design. Price will be pivotal amid attention on tariffs and component costs.

Prices, lineup shifts, and the ‘Air’ trade-offs

Analysts from Morgan Stanley and Loop Capital believe price hikes could be possible, CNN reports. A Morgan Stanley note led by Erik Woodring suggested Apple could drop a lower storage tier for iPhone 17 Pro to nudge buyers toward pricier models, potentially offsetting higher component costs. Canalys’ Runar Bjørhovde told CNN that tariff dynamics make pricing a main storyline, with Day 1 prices often signaling the year’s trajectory.

Apple has struggled to land a lasting fourth model, having removed the Mini and reportedly replacing the Plus with an Air, per Bloomberg cited by CNN. That could mean compromises such as a single rear camera versus the standard iPhone 16’s two, according to Bloomberg. Tighter consumer spending and longer upgrade cycles may challenge a thin-design pitch, while Samsung has already introduced a slimmer Galaxy S25 Edge.

Yet, as Forrester’s Dipanjan Chatterjee noted to CNN, the “Air” name has resonated across MacBook and iPad lines—suggesting a slimmer iPhone could, too.
