Apple builds its own Siri AI search; Google’s Gemini demoted to summarizer

A new report points to Apple preparing an upgraded Siri with AI-enabled web search that leans on Apple’s own Foundation Models and can optionally call out to Google’s Gemini for web summarization. According to AppleInsider, the feature is described as part of Apple Intelligence and is framed as a rumor with a “Likely” score.

Apple Intelligence at the core

Apple’s approach, as described, centers Apple Foundation Models at the base of the experience, including for search-related functions. While third-party models are expected to participate via Private Cloud Compute, AppleInsider says the underlying search capability would be handled by Apple’s models. This aligns with the report’s characterization that Apple remains committed to its internal models despite involving outside systems.

According to a Bloomberg report cited by AppleInsider, Apple plans to release its app intent–powered Siri in the spring, with enhanced AI web search among its features. The same Foundation Models that power the contextual app intent system are said to underpin the search experience as well.

How Apple and Google might split roles

AppleInsider reports that Google has allegedly provided a version of Gemini that runs in Private Cloud Compute to act as a web summarizer tool. In this arrangement, Apple’s models would serve as the planner and search operator—handling tasks tied to on-device personal data—while the Google model could help retrieve and collate information from the web.

Three-part Siri architecture and timing

The rumored upgraded Siri is described as having three core components: a planner, a search operator, and a summarizer. Per AppleInsider’s summary of the Bloomberg report, Apple’s Foundation Model would take on the planner and search roles, with summarization potentially supported by Gemini running privately in the cloud.

AppleInsider adds that the new Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence LLMs, is expected to arrive with iOS 26.4 in early 2026. The publication emphasizes that Apple previously changed course on its AI approach, and details about the final implementation remain to be learned. According to AppleInsider, the reporting underscores Apple’s continued Google search deal while outlining how Gemini could participate through Private Cloud Compute as a summarizer.
