Amazon wants Alexa to remember you like a friend

Amazon wants Alexa to remember things about users like a close friend would. The company shared its vision for the assistant’s future at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Amazon hopes to recapture the excitement Alexa created when it launched in 2014 as an easy voice assistant for homes.

Alexa proved popular and sparked a resurgence in voice assistants. But ChatGPT’s 2022 release brought AI to the mainstream. Amazon was caught off guard and spent the last couple of years revamping its strategy. After saying in 2023 that a more personal version was coming, Amazon finally launched Alexa+ in 2025.

Making Alexa Stand Out

According to CNN, Amazon launched a new Alexa website last week. Users who sign up for early access to Alexa+ can chat with the assistant online. They can continue those conversations on other devices like Amazon Echo and the Alexa app.

Amazon devices chief Panos Panay said the company is not racing to develop the most advanced AI model. Instead, it focuses on products that apply AI to the real world using context from Amazon’s devices and services.

Panay described an example that sets Alexa apart. When he told Alexa he needed a new dog harness, the assistant had options waiting on his Echo Show device at home by the time he finished walking his pet. In another case, Alexa helped his family pick a restaurant by recalling their past searches and making new recommendations.

Memory Drives Engagement

Google and OpenAI are pursuing a similar direction. Both Gemini and ChatGPT can remember context from previous conversations. Google says it can find tickets, book restaurants, and call stores to check stock on a user’s behalf.

But Panay insists Alexa is more personal than competing chatbots. He says Alexa’s memory combined with its ability to execute real-world tasks will make it stand out. Amazon says Alexa+ users are having twice as many conversations with the upgraded version.

Moving Alexa Beyond the Home

Daniel Rausch, vice president of Amazon’s Alexa and Echo divisions, said making Alexa more useful outside the home will be a big focus this year. Amazon plans to add new capabilities to Echo Frames, the Alexa-enabled smart glasses it launched in 2019.

Amazon acquired Bee last year, a company that makes a wristband that records users and provides insights on their conversations. The device generates to-do lists based on recordings and other content. Rausch said the company plans to bring those capabilities together with Alexa. When asked about privacy concerns, Panay said Amazon gives consumers choice over how long Alexa saves voice recordings and transcripts.
